GERMAN DESIGN. RETHOUGHT.

When we started ROOM IN A BOX in 2013, everything revolved around corrugated cardboard. We wanted to show that it could be used to create furniture that is lightweight, sturdy and surprisingly functional. Does furniture have to be heavy? Does a bed need a slatted frame? And when life changes, do you really need new furniture?

We don’t think so.

That’s why, since 2013, we’ve been developing furniture that does many things differently from conventional furniture. We reduce constructions to the essentials, rethink functions and develop solutions that adapt easily to different living situations.

But since our beginnings, we haven’t just continued to develop our furniture – our idea of ROOM IN A BOX has evolved too. Because for us, good living doesn’t stop at corrugated cardboard. Today, we develop furniture and products for living and sleeping that make everyday life easier and your home better.

Alongside our corrugated cardboard furniture, our range now also includes textiles, our specially developed natural latex mattress and other new furniture concepts. We consider construction, function and materials together from the very beginning. Our careful choice of materials gives us the freedom to develop new ideas and keep rethinking our designs.

Our ideas and designs are created here in Berlin and developed into finished products together with our long-standing production partners. Most of our products are then manufactured in Germany and shipped directly to you from there. For other products, such as our bed linen and natural latex mattress, we also work with carefully selected partners in Europe.

What started with corrugated cardboard continues to shape the way we think about living today: uncomplicated, flexible and with the courage to do things differently.

13 YEARS OF EXPERIENCE

When we started ROOM IN A BOX in 2013, we were 100% in agreement on one thing - the idea of a good piece of furniture. A good piece of furniture must convince not only in terms of its function and design, but equally in terms of its sustainability and price.

We develop cardboard furniture that meets exactly those criteria. It's sustainable, inexpensive and of its own aesthetics! The heart of our range - our cardboard Bed 2.0 - has already sold many thousands times. And the best comes at the end: once it reaches the end of its life cycle, it returns 100% to the raw material cycle.

Even after 13 years, our vision remains unbroken: To develop a furniture line that convinces with its sophisticated simplicity, makes our customers' lives better and protects the environment.

When developing our furniture, we focus on well-thought-out, modular constructions that give you as much flexibility as possible in how you use them. Many of our pieces can be adapted, extended or recombined to suit different living situations.

We reduce our constructions to as few different components as possible and design them so that individual parts can be easily replaced or added. The result is furniture that works simply and can be used in new ways again and again.

In the design of our furniture, we rely on modular construction methods that allow our customers an extremely high flexibility of use and encourage creativity. They are designed to consist of as few components as possible, which can be easily replaced and enable the modification of the furniture.

Completely free of environmentally harmful adhesives, our furniture is preassembled by hand and, in the case of our bed, shipped already assembled.

At the end of the chain is a high-quality and durable design product, manufactured under fair and environmentally friendly conditions and tested for compatibility with German standards.

SUSTAINABILITY

NACHHALTIGKEIT

ROOM IN A BOX - Zero Waste Herstellung
ROOM IN A BOX - Nachhaltiges Material Wellpappe

Our furniture concept is characterized by its circular nature. The material of our choice - corrugated cardboard - consists of 54 % to 80 % recycled material and for the remaining part of virgin fibers. The latter comes from sustainable forestry and provides the stability needed for furniture construction. The cardboard furniture can be 100% recycled. Vegan starch glue made from potato, corn or wheat starch is used as the adhesive. We then finish the material exclusively with environmentally friendly water-based printing inks.

The environmental balance sheet for corrugated board production and processing has greatly improved in recent years. The recovery rates for the recovered paper used have been significantly increased and energy consumption substantially reduced. The paper for our cardboard furniture from our own production is produced and processed in Germany, which also means that transport distances can be kept short.

We sell our products exclusively online and ship them climate-neutrally.

ZERO WASTE PRODUCTION

CONSCIOUS CHOICE OF MATERIALS

ROOM IN A BOX - Zero Waste Herstellung

The components of our furniture are die-cut in the corrugated cardboard plant from the highest quality heavy-duty board. The use of novel processes in diemaking preserves our corrugated board during processing, resulting in high stability and an aesthetic end result.

To reduce waste from the outset, we make sure that components can be arranged on the cutting dies as efficiently as possible. Cardboard scraps that accumulate as waste during production are returned directly to the recycling loop.

The materials we use for our products are anything but an afterthought. We choose them carefully based on their properties, quality and intended use. We also consider where they come from, how they are processed and what happens to them after use.

This is reflected throughout our entire range: For many of our furniture pieces, we use corrugated cardboard containing 54 to 80% recycled fibres. Our bed linen is made from organic cotton, while our specially developed mattress uses natural latex. Where different requirements come together, we deliberately combine materials to make the most of their individual strengths.

From the development stage onwards, we make sure that different materials are kept as easy to separate as possible, so they can be directed to the appropriate recycling or recovery streams at the end of their useful life. We also take a close look at the other components we use: Our cardboard furniture is made using starch-based adhesives derived from potato, corn or wheat starch, as well as water-based printing inks.

This way, we don’t consider materials in isolation, but as part of a well-thought-out product design.

LONGEVITY

ROOM IN A BOX - Langlebige Möbel aus Wellpappe

Although our cardboard furniture can be recycled at the end of its life cycle, it is by no means disposable. On the contrary - each of our pieces of furniture is designed and manufactured as a fully-fledged alternative to a conventional piece of furniture. The use of strong kraft papers ensures good resistance, even to liquids. It makes them durable and long-lasting.

If treated well, we assume that our cardboard Bed 2.0, for example, has a life expectancy of about 10 years. And if any component gets damaged early, it can be easily replaced without the need to dispose of the whole piece of furniture.

When it comes to production, we also aim to use materials as efficiently as possible and make sensible use of existing raw materials.

For our corrugated cardboard furniture, this starts with the construction itself: The individual components are designed so they can be arranged as efficiently as possible on the die-cutting forms. Any corrugated cardboard offcuts produced during die-cutting are collected and fed directly back into the recycling cycle.

Other products also make use of materials that are generated as by-products or leftover materials from other processes. The buttons on our bed linen, for example, are made from coconut shells left over from coconut processing. Coconut fibres are also used as a component of our natural latex mattress. They are extracted from the outer husk of the coconut, processed into a breathable fibre mat and sprayed with natural latex to give the material structure and elasticity.

INDOOR CLIMATE

A CLOSER LOOK

ROOM IN A BOX - Bett 2.0 aus recycelter Wellpappe

We spend a large part of our lives within our own four walls – and around a third of it in bed. For us, that’s a good reason to take a closer look at the materials we surround ourselves with there.

That’s why, when developing our products, we consider not only design and function, but also the materials used and how they are processed. For our corrugated cardboard furniture, for example, we use water-based printing inks. For our textiles and natural latex mattress, we pay close attention to the composition of the materials used and work with manufacturers that follow recognised testing and certification standards such as OEKO-TEX®.

Because for us, a well-thought-out product isn’t just about how it looks and functions – it’s also about what goes into it.

The design is simple: straightforward in form, sober in its aesthetics and functional in use. The use of corrugated board benefits both rooms and their occupants. Corrugated board has a regulating effect on the humidity of the indoor climate. In addition, it can positively influence the acoustics of a room. This is because corrugated board has sound-absorbing properties. It can make a positive contribution, especially in office environments.

The natural surfaces of strong kraft paper are warm to the touch. They are resistant and soft at the same time. In addition, they can be colored or stickered. There are no limits to the creative imagination. Cardboard furniture creates design freedom where we spend a long time - in the bedroom and in workrooms.

MADE TO LAST

LANGLEBIGKEIT

ROOM IN A BOX - Langlebige Möbel aus Wellpappe

We develop our products with the aim of making them last as long as possible. To achieve this, we rely on high-quality materials, well-thought-out solutions and workmanship tailored to the intended use.

When it comes to our corrugated cardboard furniture in particular, one thing is important to us: It isn’t designed as a short-term temporary solution, but as fully functional furniture for everyday use. That’s why we use sturdy, heavy-duty corrugated cardboard and a construction designed to meet the demands of everyday life.

And if something does break or needs to be replaced, individual components of many of our furniture pieces can be replaced. So there’s no need to replace the entire piece of furniture straight away.
