The Australian diver Matthew Mitcham is a true icon in the sport. At the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing, he won gold in the 10-meter platform - delivering one of the highest single-dive scores in Olympic history. Along the way, he also made sporting history: Mitcham became the first openly gay athlete to win an Olympic gold medal.
In 2024, Mitcham attended the Olympic Games in Paris himself and was able to say from first-hand experience that the much-discussed cardboard beds were anything but joyless or “anti-sex.”
